Subject: sql Error - Unknown Column
It seems something has become corrupt in my WEC site. For no apparent reason, I cannot add page content to any page. I get the following error:

I have not done anything in my staff directory for a few weeks.

It also give me a 'Sorry, you didn't have proper permissions to perform this change." if I try to add content using the wizard.

And somehow everything is in German all of a sudden?!?!?!? I logged out and back in and it's back in English. Weird!

I am still pretty fresh at typo and mySQL so I am not too sure where to go from here. I would like to uninstall the wec dir extension and reinstall it but I am not sure if this will whack my existing staff content.

Can someone please help me troubleshoot this.

Thanks in advance!

Bob

Bob,

It looks like there was a change to the database or the extension code. Can you e-mail me a username and password for the TYPO3 backend and we can get it fixed pretty fast I think. I can then tell you what the change was. Click on my name in the header for my e-mail.

Bob,

Thanks for admin user access. The solution was to uninstall the staff extension and then to reinstall it. It is very rare that reinstalling extensions in TYPO3 is needed or even helps at all. At this point, we are unsure what the specific cause of this was. We will be looking into it more though.

Thanks a lot Mark!

I did install/uninstall several mail form extensions to test drive them so I wonder if that somehow broke something. I may recall hitting the back button at one point during an operation that seemed to be locked up.

So should I assume that uninstalling (or reinstalling) an extension that has a storage folder (like the staff directory) will not affect the associated data at all? i.e. If I uninstall the staff directory, I will not lose my staff entries?

Thanks again!

Bob,

Correct, uninstalling an extension does not delete the data you have entered into it because that data is stored in the database. To delete that, you would need to use List to delete the individual records.

The error felt like an install or uninstall that was partly completed. And that corrupted the config settings. By reinstalling the staff extension, those settings were re-written and the problem went away. So it sounds like this is what happened. No harm done though. You are back and running.

Note: for testing new extensions, I suggest testing locally using the WEC-TYPO3 Server for Mac or PC. The reason for this is that ANYONE can add an extension in TYPO3. So the quality can vary dramatically. If you test them locally on your computer you can easily erase everything and start over if something goes wrong. Then, once you find a good extension that you like, you can install it on your live server. This approach has worked well for me. I also suggest posting to the forums here to learn what extensions other people have used and recommend.
