Where can I find some useful documentation about using this extension? The developer's manual at Typos3 was not what I need.

If you're referring to the "cal" extension, the Calendar forum on this site might be what you're looking for. If this is the older extension that came with the older starter packages, I'd highly recommend switching to "cal" as it offers a lot more functionality than the original calendar package.
Note that if you're using PHP < 5, you'll need one of the < 1.x releases of the cal extension. The 1.x versions only work with PHP5 and higher.
If that doesn't help or you're not ready to switch, you may want to post some specific questions. I would recommend browsing through the calendar forum on this site to see if any of your questions might already be answered.

Thank you Peter and Manfred for your responses but the extended calendar extension would appear to be a different extension to cal and is now included in the WEC package. The developer's manual at the Typo3 website does not included information about how to configure it.
I have had another look in the "howtos" and "Add a Calendar Event" may give me what I want. Thanks for your interest.
