Is it possible to configure the map extension to just show the red pins. I wan to give an indication of where our people live but not show their address etc. Should I create a new template to do that?

There is no way to not have the markers open. However, you can set what the info bubble will show. Look at the static template in the typo3conf/ext/wec_map/pi1/static/setup.txt. That's how the marker bubble is configured by default. You can change that and stick it in your template setup field.
