Subject: Flash Player plays mp3 files at double speed
I have just installed the Flash Player extension for the first time to allow the online playing to two mp3 files. Installation went fine and I have now added the plugin to a page and set it up to play two mp3 files. But the files are playing at high speed (a very interesting effect, but not the desired one!). The page can be found here: http://portsmouth.anglican.org/index.php?id=1095

I have done no configuration via Typoscript, this is a straight installation and then a link to the mp3 file from within the flexform.

Many thanks for any help.

Wow, that is strange. We use this player a lot on our church website. Since there are no parameters to set, it must be something with the MP3 encoding that causes this error. I believe our MP3s are encoded with these parameters:

32 Kilo bits per second
16 bit sample size
22050 Sample Rate
Mono
Fraunhofer Codec

I know we have tried several other settings and they all worked fine, but this is what we mostly use. If you can find the parameters out for your MP3, please post what they are.

In Christ,
Mark

Sandy,
After a little investigation, it looks like Flash itself is to blame. According to http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flash/mx2004/main_7_2/00001680.html

I found my mp3 files playing too fast was due to the sample rate I recorded the sound files in. Flash requires the sample rate to be set to one of the following: 11KHz, 22KHz, or 44.1KHz. I changed my sample rate of all my mp3's to 44.1KHz, and they played fine.

This is true from my testing this morning as well. I tested with both the wec_flashplayer and another TYPO3 extension for playing MP3s through Flash and they both exhibited the same problems.

It looks like your MP3 has a sample rate of 16KHz so bumping it up to 22KHz should do the trick. Now that we know about this issue and understand it, we'll add a note about it to the documentation.

Thanks,
Jeff

Mark & Jeff,

Thank you for the info. I have done some playing around with settings, and also searched the web for some further ideas.

I use Audacity for recording, editing and exporting mp3 files and when I set it to 44.1KHz it still played fast (using a bit rate of 32k). I then found the following table of working combinations: http://loudblog.de/forum/viewtopic.php?id=46 Using Audacity and setting the bit rate to 48k and the sample rate to 22KHz works.

I would suggest that something needs to be added to the documentation to make others aware of this issue.

Thank you for the help - it is very much appreciated.

Sandy,
I'm not seeing the 48k bit rate as an option in my copy of audacity how did you set that?
I'm running Audacity 1.24

Thanks

I was finally able to get my mp3s in a format that did not play at double speed when using the WEC flash player. listen to it here
http://www.mosaiclife.org/passion/see player on the right side of the page

However, I could not use audacity to directly encode the file. I had to use the lame encoder (which audacity uses to encode mp3s)from the cmd line in windows like so

lame -b 32 -a --resample 22.05 original.mp3 formatted.mp3

Fortunately there is a windows front end for lame here:

http://www.dors.de/razorlame/download.php

This created a file small enough (9mb) in this format (mono 22mhz sample rate 32kps) that plays at the right speed.
Fortunately there is a windows front

Here are some web sites that I found that helped me get a handle on this
http://loudblog.de/forum/viewtopic.php?id=46 mp3 formats that work with flash
http://www.boutell.com/newfaq/creating/chipmunk.html identifying the problem with how audacity encodes and explaining how to use lame directly to work around the problem
http://users.pandora.be/satcp/razorlame01.htm#RAZORLAME tutorial on using razor lame
http://jeroenwijering.com/?thread=Too_fast_mp3 explanation of the problem with flash and audacity

The last one says that the problem which originates with flash 6 has been fixed in later versions. Maybe the WEC flash player could be upgraded to use Flash 8 or 9.
Hopes this helps others who are trying to get podcasts and mp3s online.

Okay, we will take a look at this for our next version of the Flash player. It is now added to our needed feature list.

In Him,
Mark
