Subject: DEVO-Content Template Problem
Hi WEC

I wish you a merry christmas!

In our Demo Devo - Our Tsunami Online Memorial - we have some problems!

1. Text which is inserted will alwazs be printed without paragraph breaks if it is NOT in CENTERED mode. On Davids Page I had to center all text to get it readable therwise all text would have been pasted one after each other in FF!

2. There is no chance to choose a date later then Saturday January 7th
It is verz difficult to choos an advanced or earlier date. It would be good to itegrate a calender like in the backend which popps up to choose a date. This would be especially usefull for the one who is setting up the DEVO to control the output!

3. During the periode 2. January - 5. January a birthday page should appear with Bessy. But it won't show up.

4. It would be good to name the content fields a more specific where they appear in frontend. Like Questions right Column. It took quite a while to figure this out. Or name it RIGHT COLUMN f.e. Questions - LEFT COLUMN 1 f.e. Content, LEFT COLUMN 2 f.e. Scripture ...

Please have a look here - it is rather confusig!!! http://lisandi.com/tsunami/memorial/family_demo/?devo_dt=122405&devo_sec=2

The order is 1 2 5 4 6 and 3 is in Left Column: An Order like 1,2,3,4,5 in left Column and 6 in right column or name it A would be much better and logical!

5. A Error Message is appearing while saving Content: A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. you can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Merry Christmas
ANDI

Merry Christmas to you too!

Wouldn't this be something in your CSS? We have not seen this with other installations of the Devotional Journal.

The Devotional Journal was designed as a tool for daily devotions. So, when it starts up, it takes you to the current date. Once you are at the current date, you have the option to move around a few days forward or backward. We don't have a full pop up calendar because it is not designed to jump large numbers of days because that is not needed for a daily devotional. As I look at your application, it may not apply well to this extension. However, I really like what you are doing. It is powerful.

Is the start date set to January 5, 2006 and is the end date set to January 6, 2006 (please check the year too)? If it still is not displaying, just to test, please try moving the date to a date in December. Does it display there?

Depending on your template, the content can be placed anywhere. So, doesn't it make sense to name the content for what it is and then your template places it where it should go?

Isn't the order a function of the template? Could that be changed in your template?

When this happened, did the script eventally complete?

Merry Christmas!!!!!!

Hi Mark

I am using only STANDARD CSS of the WEC Packages or Extensions. There is nothig changed right now. I tried it also in our dummy installation of the WEC on our Home Computer and had the same problems with the CSS. Probably it is a problem of the CSS which belongs to the 2 Column Sacrified Tradition Taupin Template. I will check tomorrow if another WEC Template will cause the same, no or similar problems.

Even if it is not designed as a memorial page or a page for studies - also a Devotion is a kind of study place in my opinion - it is very difficult to check the appearance of the content and work a long time ahead when you only can click a few days in front or back. F.e we made in our Bible Group the experience that we very often check and move back to things we have talked about weeks and even months ago. We want to understand the Bible as a whole and not a part at a time.

As a user it is very difficult to move a month or even 2 weeks forward, because this will be the same like many reloaded complete pages only because the calendar has to be updated to the next week. One possible solutio would be to place a javascript at this place which enables you to scroll fluently forward or backward or the idea from last post, to place a calendar which pops up when you touch a button beside the forward backward button.

There is an extension available in TER and it is used in TIMTAB for exactly this purpose. This Calendar would be also able to show the customer, student , ... teacher how long a specific content will-was available and for how long it will stay still online. f.e with different colours.

You are exactly right with the order. It is the template. BUT - The idea of the WEC - please correct me if I am wrong - to enable volunteers which probably never have worked with a CMS before to work with a ready made system. A WEC-user should be able to install the WEC package and the extensions without much additional work and configuration, especially CSS.

I know and have experieced it very often that Extensions are NOT ready for Non-ComputerProfessionals and Programmers, even if they are named stable. If you check the order in the DEVO Templates or the Naming of the fields you will see that it is directly inside the original Template this unlogical disorder. It is the same with the CSS, I think and will check tomorrow.

I really love the WEC Idea of a user friendly Typo3 as we really need a userfriendly Thaipo 3 :-) They have never heard before of this CMS and even never worked with a CMS at all in our Churches. We are trying to enable them to get online with your extensions, so they should be and stay-get as userfriendly as possible, otherwise you will get the same movememnt happening with the WEC Extensions like with most of the other TER Extensions, which are only copies of other Extensions because of one small spot which was missing f.e.. Instead of working together and get one Extension as good as possible like in a big Community many Extension Developer tend to produce their own Extesions-Labels. F.e this happened to tt-products and many others too. zk-products is NOW integrated and thats fine. One good example out of hundreds which still work as copies with small changes.

With the date you are absolutely right. It works in December but not in January. A bit funny! I changed to 28.12 - 30.12 with the Birthday of Bessy.

I will let you know my results tomorrow, when I checked the DEVO with another WEC-Template. Merry Christmas Andi

P.S. General Question Are the WEC Extensions SPAM protected. It seems as the @ sign isn't changed to (at) . I changed it manually on our pages but then the eMail doesn't work anymore.

Hi Andi,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Devo. There is indeed a problem with the weekly calendar so you cannot advance. That will be fixed by the end of this week. I am also looking to add a monthly popup -- that will be optional. I know we do not need it for the online TJ, but I see how it can be useful for other Devotionals.

In terms of naming the fields, we wanted to make them have a real name because it is a devotional first. The order is not as important and you can easily change it with the template. We researched online Devotionals and found these fields as the ones most used.

I do understand the issue though that if you are using the Devotional for non-Devotional purposes. One solution is to go into the locallang_db.php in the typo3conf/ext/wecdevo and rename the fields under tx_wecdevo_content. That way you could re-use this. I will have to investigate if there is an easy way to make this happen, but I do not know of any.

The issue about teacher-based curriculum for the Devo has been brought up by several others. I am looking into how I could make it so that it is not necessarily date-based, but instead progress-based. That way you could setup a whole curriculum and let students take it at their pace. Let me know if you see any value in this because we will be discussing it with others who are interested.

I know about your frustrations of making the Typo3 system as easy-to-use as possible. I run into it too as I develop the extensions because it is quite difficult to make them easy-to-use. We are learning though here at WEC and planning to make our extensions more integrated. We want to continually improve them and really appreciate your feedback.

Hi Dave

Thanks for the new DEVO in TER - unfortunately I couldn't find how to activate the monthly calender. The small Textsize Boxes look much better then before :-)
What a bout the paging (I actually never needed) but they are gone now - right?
There is still the problem with the z-index in IE. The Menu from Template 5 Sactrified Traditions moves the Menu from the page behind the Menu of the Devotion. Should be the other way round! FF looks fine.

Happy New Year

Hi Andi,

I did not include the ###MONTHLY_CALENDAR### in the 1.3.0 template, but I did add it to 1.3.1. So look for it there. You can move this around to wherever you would like. It is a simple popup calendar that seems to work well. Let me know what you think.

The paging icon is gone because forcePaging is set. That way you cannot override.

Also, I removed all z-index references for the tab menus and they seemed to work fine. I had just reduced them before. So now check them out in 1,3,1

Good Morning Dave

Looks very nice the monthly calendar . And it is working perfectly, switching forward and backward. Navigating is much easier now!
The problem with the zIndex is still existing in IE. - Why are people using the IE grrr? IE stands for inclusive Error I think! Opera FF works fine. The MainMenu is been cut in two halfs by the DEVO Menu.

Thanks for your good work

I am using an older version of TYPO3 on one of our sites with a marker-based template. I'm trying to use the Devo Journal extensions, but am having trouble applying a template. At least, that is what I think the problem is. I've changed the code in my new template, applied the new template path in the Template > Constants and also tried the new template path on the page where I have the devo journal plugin installed. After all this and clearing the cache, the extension won't find my custom template. I ended up going into the wecdevo.tmpl in the extension's directory and editing it and the changes then show up.

I guess I am wondering whether the extension requires a TemplaVoila-based template and the WEC package, or whether it can run on a different configuration.

On another related note, I am also having the issue of the the text all condensing onto one line. However, if I apply any formatting in the RTE (htmlArea) I can sort of get it to work. In a related thread, Dave recommended some Page TSconfig to apply to the Devo page itself, but I am wondering if this is for a different RTE.

If anyone has some insight, it would be greatly appreciated. We're excited about using the extension, but just want to make sure it's configured correctly.

Thanks!

Barbara

OK, my apologies. I did a little more experimentation and found that by adding the TSconfig typoscript to the page where my devo journal was located, the text within the content elements showed line breaks correctly.

Where I was having trouble was making the individual content areas such as Content, Scripture, Prayer, etc. all show up on different lines. I've gotten around this by containing each content area with a <div> in the extension template.

I'm still wondering if my problem with applying a different template is realted to my older TYPO3 install or if I am maybe overlooking something. Went through the documentation again and didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Barb
