Subject: New BE User
I am progressing well with setting up a Typo3 4.2 version of my WEC empowered website. A few weeks ago, I persuaded the person who maintains our mammoth wall-chart of our activities for the year to take on the task of feeding that information into CalendarBase. He has started doing this on another test-site that I pre-populated for that purpose.

Now that he has had some experience of messing around with the typo3, I thought that I would create a new backend user with admin powers and I was going to invite him to begin work in earnest on the new 4.2 site. Imagine my surprise when I found that once I had created the new user, his username and mine became swapped. I added a third user just to see what would happen. Lo and behold, the third user took the nick of the calendar guy, the calendar guy took my nick and I took the nick of the third user. Basically, the creation of a new backend user seems to jumble the usernames around. Whilst I was doing the admin all on my own, I was not aware of this quirk.

Is it something that I have done, that I can avoid doing again, that can be fixed readily enough or is a bug in typo3?

This has not happened to me in previous versions of typo3.

Any thoughts?

Hi, Calum...

I am very new to TYPO3, so after reading your problem, I think I couldn't help you at this monment.

In fact, I also have a little problem with WEC_typo3 4.2 version, basically typo3 4.2 is slower than 4.1.x that I feel. but I don't have WEC_typo3 4.1.x version, which is also not available for downlaoding at this site.

so, do you know any site where I could find WEC_Starter_Package 4.1.x (not fullserver version) for downloading, or do you have a copy of these versions (preferrable: v4.1.6) that could transfer to my FTP? i will email you the ftp account if you re ok with this.

thanks

You can download them here:

WEC Starter Package for TYPO3 4.1.6 in tar format

WEC Starter Package for 4.1.6 in zip format

There are several reasons why we do not have the old version generally available.

First, many newer extensions will not run on 4.1.6 and it will get worse over time.

Second, in our experience and from what we know of the code, 4.2 should actually be a little faster because it uses native PHP 5 functions that 4.1.x could not use.

Third, 4.2 has some nice usability features, but they are different than 4.1 so it is good to use them and to learn them from the start.

Forth, in time, there is increased risk of security issues as the old version is left and the new version is the main focus.

So, you have the links to 4.1.6 above, but I discourage you from using them. If you start with 4.1.6 then I think you will want to upgrade to 4.2 in the near term. So it seems best just to go to 4.2.

I hope this helps.

In Christ,
Mark

Mark, Thanks alot for your download links and advices.

the other important reason for not using 4.2 is that the server I subscribed is only PHP4 supported, although i could use 4.2 on my local machine with WAMP2 (PHP5) installed. I might consider switch to a PHP5 server once this subsription is end.

I reckon another crucial factor which might cause WEC_4.2 ran slower than original TYPO3 4.1.6 could be because WEC4.2 pre-installed with lots of extensions. thus the most slower part i felt is on BE not FE.

Anyway, thanks again for your support

Peter,

Okay, great. Of course, 4.2 will not run on PHP 4. I am pleased that you have what you need. Maybe you can talk to your hosting provider and ask them to upgrade to PHP 5.

Hey Calum,
To get back to your original question, this isn't something that I've ever seen before. Are you creating your new backend users through the list module or through User Admin?

Thanks,
Jeff

Through User Admin, Jeff. Thanks for not losing sight of my problem
I have now tried it through List but, as far as I could see, I could only create a front end user using List I could not create a backend user using List. I take it that that is normal.

So bad had the confusion of identities become that I locked myself out of the site.
I used the typo3install method of accessing and created yet another id for myself.
This time, the problem seems to have gone away.

I think that the problem arose as I was switching to and back from masquerading as the the other backend user to see what levels of access were open to him. Maybe that is how I botched things.

However, not to fret - all seems to be well again.
No matter how hard I try, it now refuses to let me corrupt it.

Thanks,
Calum

Calum, I am so happy that your problem was solved, and I am sorry to distract people attentson to my enquiries instead of yours.
Anyway, thanks for your post so that my problem was also settled.

Peter,
I was happy enough for you to raise your issue in this thread. By the time that I worked out what I should reply to you, I saw that you were receiving the help that you needed and in a much more informed way than I would have been able to offer. It was better that WEC deal with enquiries regarding the supply, etc. of their software. Please do not take my lack of response to your initial intervention as an indication of some kind of huff on my part. I did wonder if they would ever get back to my question though. lol

Glad that it all worked out for you and to have provided the springboard for your question.

Cheers,
Calum

Calum,

I've had the same problem with switching users in the User Admin to check permissions. The problem turned out to be a mouse error more than anything else. I tried to click on the switch user icon with the mouse pointer, but that clicked on the user below. I had to put the center of the mouse pointer on the icon of the user I wanted to switch to, so it looked like I was actually clicking on the user above (since that's where the tip of the arrow pointed). Phew, hope that made sense.

Not sure what to do about the problem, but the good news is your backend users are fine

Christoph
