Is there any problems with installing the server to go on a Vista system? My laptop is showing it will take 12 hours to unzip the files.

Hi Tim

I featured the same but don't worry it will go much faster. I guess the Microsoft Programmer who programmed the calculater of zipping, copying or movingtime still calculated by hand, but actually a modern processor performs it really fast. This way sometimes 12 Microsoft Hours turn out as 2 real minutes. Sometimes even faster.

But be aware that VISTA is really hard to handle for Developers as long as you have this userrights/permission stuff enabled. Disable it simply and you will have a wonderful environment.

The best way I figured out to run WEC on my VISTA-LAP was installing the
XAMPP (newest Version 1.6.5) http://www.apachefriends.org/en/index.html copy in a new windows ImageMagick 6.3.3 (mail me if you'll need it) and setup a virtual host environment in windows using the "host" file, and vhosts in apache. This way you will be able to handle multiple WEC installations just like on your own website.
But AGAIN - Disable the rights/permission stuff in Vista otherwise you really can get crazy because nearly everything seems to be blocked. We weren't even able to move or copy files we had just created. If you need vhost, my.cnf (for utf, php.ini settings for xampp mail me.
And if you have Xampp running you can easily use the regular wec package.

Tim,
From the little bit I've read, this seems to be an issue with Vista's built in unzip. It seems that its pretty slow to begin with and on top of that it tries to check every file in the zip file to be sure its safe. When you start talking about a complete webserver environment, it quickly bogs down

The link below has some tips on speeding up the unzip process and some links to the other programs that can do the unzip. I can put in a plug for 7-Zip that they link to. I've seen people get much better results with that.

Thanks,
Jeff

Thanks Jeff for deleting my doubled post.

A good alternative to
*
create: 7Z, ARC, BZ2, GZ, PAQ/LPAQ, PEA, QUAD, TAR, UPX, ZIP;
*
open: ACE, ARJ, CAB, DEB, ISO, LHA, RAR, RPM and more archive types...
is peazip

It is free - open-source, fast, comfortable even on VISTA and LINUX!
(for all those who need a 7zip tool for LINUX its great)

All,

If you right click on the file and select Properties then click the Unblock button in the lower right then it should unzip lots faster. Since the file was downloaded, it does more checks during the unzip and that slows things down a lot.

Thanks Tim,
The 7 Zip took all of 15 seconds to unzip it where I have been setting here the last 2.5 hrs with Vista and it has only unzipped ~30%.
