Subject: Can't Configure Site URL
I've just about finished the starter package install. I've probably done something wrong.

I can't get to the Configuring - Site URL

The instructions say to click on Web and then WEC Config.
When I do so, I don't get the page that the documentation
says that I should be at. In particular I get two columns to the right of the TYPO3 menu.
The first column is a directory for my church that is filled in with a predefined set of pages.
The second column is similar, but entitled First Church

Nowhere on this page is there a drop down menu with Edit Site Constants as one of the menu items.

I've probably gotten to far into the setup and bypassed something.

Clicking on a page name in the first column does nothing.
Clicking on a page name in the second column causes a ling error message that says that the Site URL isn't set up - go to Web then WEC Config. Doing this, of course, puts me right back at where the documentation says I should be - but alas, doing this doesn't yield the page where I can edit the Site Configuration.

Any advice would be wonderful.

Thanks in advance.

Russ,
The page that says "First Church" is most likely the Page Not Found error page for your site (the same one you'd see if you just made up an invalid URL on your site such as mysite.com/asddfjkl).

The fact that a Page Not Found error is showing up probably means there's an issue with file permissions in the typo3conf/ext directory. The actual code for WEC Config lives at typo3conf/ext/wec_config/mod1/index.php and if the permissions don't allow the web server to access this file, then the Page Not Found content will be shown instead because the webserver can't see that a file is there.

If I remember correctly, you indicated in the other thread that permissions were at 770. If you bump them up to 775 or 777 that should do the trick.

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff:

Unfortumately, all the file modes are set to 777. Well, maybe fortunately they are 777. In any event the chmod suggestion doesn't solve my problem.

If you go to www.rearcher.com/bjumc67.doc, you can see the page that I see (without a way to set the URL - and - I've given you a copy of the ls -l showing the files' modes.

I now wonder if restarting the starter installation after fixing the memory_limit problem skipped something and perhaps I should delete everything and start all over again from the tar file (and with the php.ini file in my root directory.

This is kind of a brute force way to proceed, but maybe it is also the prudent thing.

I'll wait to see if you have any other suggestions before I restart from scratch.

Anyway, your advice has helped me greatly.

Russ,
As strange as it sounds, it may actually be that you need to reduce your permissions. Some hosts specifically disallow 777 permissions so backing it down to 755 or 770 could do the trick.

Thanks,
Jeff

Tried both 770 and 755 - same result. Instead of the WEC configuration page, I get the "First Church" page with its "dummy" web site pages. I think my best option is to blow it all away with a set of unix rm -R commands and rebuild from scratch.

Thanks for all your help and advice. I really appreciate your help.

Regards.

OK folks - I really need help.

I've completely removed the starter package and the associated MySQL database.
This left me with a bare root directory with only a few files (no directories).

Then I did a complete new reinstall.

And I get the same result. When I eventually get to the backend page, the WEB-->WEC Config
menu gives me exactly the same result as the WEB-->List menu item. That is, to give me the barebones structure for a web site with nothing in any of its pages.

The top level is named "Bishop Janes United Methodist Church" - my church. Underneath this directory is "First Church" and "Storage Folder". Under "First Church" are "Home", "About Us", "News & Events" and so on.

IT DOES NOT START AT: "WEC Starter Package" as described in the PDF documentation on page 31. IT DOES NOT HAVE A DROP DOWN MENU WITH" "Edit Site Constants".

So I can't configure the site name, site url, slogan,.......

I'm completely baffled.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Russ,

Are you sure that you have recursively set the privileges on the appropriate directories like typo3conf. We sometimes find that people set the priv of the directory but not all the files and directories inside (recursively).

Also note that we created VineHosting.com to take care of these sort of WEC installation details for you. Vine may be an option for you to consider. At Vine you can install the WEC Starter Package in less than one minute and they offer some additional features too like all the WEC templates pre-installed.

Mark:

I'm sure - to the best of my recollection - that I executed the ./set_permissions.sh script at the appropriate time. However, searching through the unix file structure at random, there are occasional files not set to 777. Their time stamps indicae tha they were created after the directories. I assumed that these were created by the starter package 1-2-3 process. Just to make sure, I'll blow away everything again and restart from scratch.

The vine option is one that Iguess is possible. It offers a lot less in resources than our current ISP and is more expensive. I've had a very good experience with and a good relation with our ISP for the past 5 years or with our current church web site. So I am reluctant to start all over again with gaining approvals and with coping with two ISPs diring the transition - which I expect to be very messy anyway - what with switching domain names back and forth between our new and old sites.

Thanks for your advice.

Hi Russ. :-)

Not sure if I fully grok what you're experiencing, but... a quick guess based on your first description:

Are you running the Firefox v3.x web browser? If so, could you try another (IE7, Safari). On some versions of Typo3 (anything pre 4.2.1 except for 4.1.7 if I recall) Firefox 3 has some serious issues on the backend view.

Hope this helps...

Russ,

You should not need to start from scratch each time. Have you run the server checker here:

http://webempoweredchurch.com/gettingstarted/installing/wec_server_checker/

That should help tell us what the issues are. Besides server skills and your time to install and update WEC-TYPO3, the common challenge with lower cost hosting solutions is that they often have server settings that are designed for hosting simple HTML websites that may include a few scripts. They are frequently not designed to run a powerful database-driven content management system like WEC-TYPO3 well. Also, if WEC-TYPO3 does run, it may be very sluggish now or in the future as more websites are added to the server. This is because they usually put a lot more websites on one server than Vine does. It is simple business. They need to do all this to make money. So, this may look like a better deal than it really is. But hopefully the server checker can help identify any changes needed and this will work okay for you.

In Christ,
Mark
