Subject: Not happy with current host
I currently have WEC Typo3 installation running on a host but it often runs very slowly. It's not a particularly big installation (all files backed up in GZ <170Mb, MYSQL dbase <17Mb). It's a shared host and although it copes well with other PHP scripts and CMS's I've used in the past Typo3 seems to be slow on it. I notice many people use Vine hosting for their installations.
Does this run Typo3 well and at a good speed?
Is it possible to just point my domain to their DNS servers rather than transfer it?
When transferring would I just need a backup of the MYSQL database and the directories and files?
Would I need to create a new database user and password on the new server and tell Typo3 somehow?

I really don't want to get this wrong as hosting is cheaper bought anually and I can't afford to keep trying out new hosts.

Thanks to anyone who can help on this.

TYPO3 does require more resources than some systems. But it is hard to know that that is the issue unless you compare them side by side. The reason is that the response time depends on the current loading on your server. If more accounts have been added to the server or more people are visiting existing websites on your server then it will slow down. So, it may just be an issue of increased loading on the server you are on. Of course it is to the hosting company's benefit to add as many accounts as possible to a server. That is especially true on very low cost hosting. My guess would be that it is a server loading issue and not TYPO3.

Well, Vine wants to pack as many people on a server as well of course. But Vine specializes in hosting TYPO3-WEC. As a result, Vine will not load as many accounts on a server and they tend to add more memory as well. So, I think Vine will provide better performance.

Just changing the DNS will not help. You need to move your site to a new server. You will need to dump the database to SQL and copy the directories/files, yes. If you tell Vine about this need, I think they will help you move. It is not simple, but it is doable.

One other possible solution is to tell your current host that your site is running too slow. They may be willing to move your site to a server that is not as loaded. Maybe. :-)

Sorry Mark didn't make it clear, I was talking about repointing domain name to their DNS servers. I have that registered with a third party to make moving easier . I understand I would have to transfer server contents, I have the relevant CPanel features enabled with my current host.

I tried getting my current host to move me to a better server but no joy. I have put a sales enquiry in with Vine to see what they can do for me.

Thanks for your prompt response.
Every Blessing,
Mark
