WEC 104: Administration

Tutorial:Administration

Modify an Existing Frontend User

For Version: TYPO3 4.0

In general, frontend users coming to your website can register by themselves using the built in registration process. However, sometimes users may need the administrator's help to modify their account for some reason, or the administrator may want to manually change setting such as placing the user in a specific group that allows access to a private feature on your website.

Finding a Frontend User in the Website User Table

  1. Login to the TYPO3 backend before you can edit frontend users. Frontend users are website visitors with accounts that enable them to login to your website to access features such as forums.
  2. Click List at the left.
  3. Scroll down and click on the Storage Folder name. This is the folder where the frontend user table is stored.
  4. The location where the frontend user information is stored is called "Website user" and there you can see the current list of frontend users. Notice that the people icons indicate user accounts that are enabled. The icons with a red "x" on them are hidden so a user could not login to the website using this account unless it is first unhidden. If your display does not have the pencil and other icons displayed to the right, then you can turn that option on by scrolling down.
  5. Please ensure that the "Extended view" option is checked to display the additional editing icons for the frontend user information and other records.
  6. If you see the frontend user name in the list that you want to edit then you can begin to edit it by clicking on the pencil icon to the right of the name.
  7. If you do not see the user in the list then you can click on the small black and white plus sign icon. This displays a longer list and provides the capability to search.
  8. Scroll to the bottom and under "Search String" enter words from any field in the frontend user information.
  9. In this example, the search is looking for any frontend user with the name of Jeff. Click the Search button.
  10. Now, the list only contains frontend users that match the search text that was typed in. Change the search as needed and select the one to edit by clicking the pencil icon to the right of the name.

Modifying the Frontend User Information

  1. Once you select the frontend  user to edit, you can modify any of the fields for the user. However, there are many extra fields that you will probably not need and it is fine to leave them empty.
  2. If needed, modify the username and password. Do not include spaces in these fields. In order to save the information, these two fields must be filled in. Using the password field, you can also look up someones password if they forget it or you can change the password.
  3. Review and change fields as needed.
  4. Make sure the Disable field is unchecked if you want the user to be able to log in.
  5. If your backend is not displaying the extra field information then you can check the Show field descriptions option.
  6. When you are done, click on the Save and Exit icon to save the changes you have made.
  7. Now, you can modify other frontend users if you choose.
