Upgrade 3.x to 4.x - Step 1 - Get the TYPO3 Source File

Note: Prior to upgrading from TYPO3 3.x to 4.0, it is important to backup your database and TYPO3-related directories and files.

Upgrading your TYPO3 software requires more web-server-administration skills than using and configuring TYPO3 once it is installed. If you are not familiar with using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Secure Shell (SSH) then you might want to ask your hosting provider to perform the first two steps:

The remaining steps use the TYPO3 Backend and could be done by either you or your hosting provider.

In order to upgrade TYPO3, you need to get the TYPO3 source file archive and copy it to your server. Here are the steps:

1. Use your web browser to go to http://typo3.org/download/packages/
2. Click on the "sourceforge.net" link toward the bottom of the page.
3. The TYPO3 installation files are stored on a website called http://SourceForge.net. From the list of files, click on the TYPO3 4.0 source tar.gz file for Unix/Linux installations. Or download the zip file below it for Windows or other installations that do not support symlinks. The filename should start with "Typo3_src."
4. In the list of SourceForge servers, choose a location near where you are located as a download location. Click "Download" next to that location.
5. Follow the prompts and instructions to save the file to your local hard drive. Be sure to remember where on your local computer the file will be stored.
6. Next, using whatever tool you have to upload files to a server, upload the TYPO3 source file to your webserver root directory. On your server, the root directory of your website may be named "public_html." Whatever its name, this directory should also contain the other TYPO3 directories from your current installation such as fileadmin, typo3conf, and uploads.
